Spiral Placemat Trivet
I first came to the Coast from Christchurch as a butcher, but was more interested in wood, therefore abandoned my meat cleaver for a lathe in 1994. I learned the art of wood turning from a well respected wood turner Charles Boyle from 'The Arts Centre' in Christchurch. Eventually I went back to the City and established my own business "Naturally Wood", however the West Coast environment has drawn me back again - this time with a wife and family.
My products are made of native New Zealand timbers (primarily Rimu), from recyclers or from people who harvest trees felled by natural river erosion. It is satisfying working with a rare timber that has true beauty. In my designs I prefer simple lines and forms, drawing inspiration from nature. This is evident in the Koru coasters and trivets which are inspired from an unfurling frond of the New Zealand silver fern.
